 KINDERGARDEN

My design for the Netherby Kindergarten Archive was inspired as due to the covid-19 pandemic I was living back in Adelaide in 2020 with my parents for the first time since moving to Melbourne five years before.

Inspired by the suburb of Netherby, where I lived for the first twenty-two years of my life. Netherby is a upper middle class suburb on the edge of the Adelaide foot hills.

While looking a maps of the area I noticed how much of the suburb is occupied by Waite Arboretum and Adelaide university so I chose this as my site. I chose a location where the central avenue of trees and a walking path meet so there was easy access to my sight.

The branched design was inspired by the flowers of the Grevillea robusta or commonly called the Silky Oak that were in bloom when I went to visit the arboretum. My design was also inspired by my experience of attending Netherby kindergarten and memories of playing and learning in the arboretum. The archive is intended to be a place where children can learn through play, inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi such as Play Mountain.
